Before you move in

Breakfast and dinner, vegetarian, seven days. Lunch on Sundays. Tell us the day before if you will miss dinner.
Is there a curfew?
The gate shuts at eleven. Late entry is by arrangement, not by ringing the bell.
How much is the deposit?
One month's rent, returned in full at the end of your notice, less anything broken.
What is the notice period?
Thirty days, from either side.

Summer Hill is the quiet end of Shimla: the university, the deodar forest and the toy-train station, with the Mall twenty minutes down the line. A student or a first-job professional wants a bed close to the campus and a way into town that does not depend on a taxi, and this is the road that has both.
Getting here
Summer Hill station on the Kalka–Shimla line, two minutes on foot. Buses from the ISBT at Tutikandi stop at the university gate. By car from Chandigarh it is three and a half hours to Shimla and twenty minutes more up the Summer Hill road.
When to come
The academic year sets the rhythm: rooms fill in July and again in January, and a bed is easiest to find in May and December. The house is warmest from March to October; the winter rooms are the ground floor, over the kitchen.

The house
I ran this house for my own two children through college, and when they left the rooms did not stay empty for long. Twenty-two beds now, students and first-job people from the plains, and the same rule as when it was family: dinner is at eight, the gate shuts at eleven, and nobody goes hungry because they were late for either.
